The Carroll Smith Mentor’s Cup recognizes Formula SAE faculty advisors who, consistently over the years, have made outstanding contributions to their programs and inspire qualities of leadership, teamwork, technical skill, self-reliance, inquisitiveness, and project responsibility in their students. Even if your advisor is relatively new, if they’ve made an impact worth highlighting, we want to hear about it!
A Carroll Smith Mentor’s Cup recipient is often characterized by some who:
- Provide continuity over time
- Are actively involved in technical, organizational, and management challenges
- Uphold the student-run character of the team
- Create a positive and encouraging environment
- Serve as a professional role model for students
The SCCA-sponsored award is presented yearly onsite at one of the Formula SAE competitions. Student teams are encouraged to nominate their faculty by sending a nomination letter detailing why their advisor deserves this honor.
So, student teams—if you have an amazing advisor, be sure to nominate them before the deadline!

- The deadline to submit your team’s nomination is April 1, 2026 before or by 11:59 PM ET.
- Teams must be registered to compete for their faculty advisor nomination to be considered.
