Question
Formula SAE requires a Tractive System Status Indicator. The intent is to provide a clear indication of a fault that is visible to the track workers.

We have received questions about the Tractive System Status Indicator:
Answer
Q: Does the Tractive System Status Indicator need to be two separate red and green lights?
A: Yes, this is the Formula SAE Rule EV.5.11.2 requirement. We are looking for the Red and Green lights to be two different lights, not one light that can be different colors, or one lens on two lights. Refer to the attachment for examples of light configurations that are acceptable and are not acceptable

Q: What is the “luminous area” referring to? How do we determine this?
A: This is to make sure each light is large enough. The area is the portion of the cover lens that is being illuminated. DOT certified units have a plastic cover that is designed to diffuse the emitted light along with a reflective back surface to redirect the light forward. For team designed LEDs without a cover lens or reflector, the luminous area will be calculated using the dispersion angle of the LED at a distance of 1” from the LEDs multiplied by the number of LEDs.

Q: May we use software to control the Tractive System Status Indicator?
A: Yes. Be aware that any software issues that prevent the Status light from functioning properly could cause a Red Car condition or Void the Inspection Approval.

Q: Our Shutdown Circuit will give a fault indication on the Tractive System Status Indicator when powered on, then we have to hit a reset which will clear the fault indication. Is this allowed, and will it create any issues?
A: Any indication of a fault by the Tractive System Status Indicator will be treated as a Red Car regardless of the reason.

Q: What if the Tractive System Status Indicator is not functioning properly?
A: Any indication of a fault by the Tractive System Status Indicator will be treated as if a fault is present (Red Car), including malfunctions and false positives. If the Status light is not indicating properly, this may Void the Inspection Approval or result in a penalty, subject to official discretion. A Tractive System Status Light that does not function properly during Dynamic events or Post Inspection would be considered a safety issue and cause a penalty to your team.

Q: Are there any specific visibility requirements for the Tractive System Status Indicator?
A: The Tractive System Status Indicator must be visible from the front of the vehicle. The Tractive System Status Indicator should be visible from angles other than directly ahead of the vehicle. We expect to clarify specific requirements if needed.
