EV Scrutineer Volunteer Information

Position Title: Scrutineer (Electric Vehicles) – (only in California and Canada)

Activity: Formula SAE Technical Inspection

Position Description: Technical inspection breaks in 5 parts.
Step 1 - Technical Inspectors will examine each vehicle to determine if it complies with the requirements and restrictions of the Formula SAE Rules Electric Only Rules. Inspections are conducted using a technical inspection check list that is published on the Formula SAE website.

This is the first test all the electric cars must go through and once passed, the car will be awarded the first “Tech” sticker and can proceed to the next step; each additional step a tech sticker will be awarded once team passes the test.

Step 2 – 4 will be operated by other areas: Mechanical Inspection, Tilt and Brake

Step 5 – Technical Inspectors will need to operate rain test as final technical inspection process before team vehicle can run any dynamic event to ensure safety.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications/ Experience: Technical inspectors should be qualified scrutineers or people familiar with electrical vehicle engineering, design, fabrication and safety.

Orientation and Training: All volunteers will need to read the rules, and will be given onsite training at the competition. If available there is also opportunity to attend pre-event training. Those who are a first-time scrutineer will be placed with a more experienced scrutineer initially.

Work Conducted via: onsite

Time Commitment: 3 days (Wed, Thurs, Fri); a 2-day minimum (Wed and Thurs). If available, we do start early inspection of accumulators on Tuesday late afternoon.

SAE Members only: NO

Leadership Skills Obtained in this Role: Opportunities exist for volunteers to serve in leadership roles onsite; opportunity also provide great leadership training for volunteers to take back to their company.
