RAIN TEST AREA – Formula SAE Electric

Last Updated 3.3.2026

EVENT CAPTAIN: Janice Hueske
ON-SITE LOCATION: West of G3 Garage
HOURS:
Thursday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Friday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

All EV cars must pass the rain test.

The car must pass Tractive Battery scruntineering, Vehicle scrutineering, Active scrutineering and Tilt Table test before the Rain Test can be conducted.

  1. The team will push the car under the rain halo and align the car as directed by the rain test event captains and raise the vehicle so the driven wheels are off the ground a minimum of 10cm. If it is an AWD car then all 4 wheels must be off the ground.
  2. All team members except the ESO must stay in a designated area for the remainder of the test. A driver is not allowed in the vehicle during the test.
  3. The ESO will energize the tractive system.
  4. The vehicle will be exposed to 2 minutes of water spray followed by a 2 minute period of no spray. If the vehicle has a fault for any reason the rain test will be considered failed.
  5. The ESO will help the rain test captain connect the IMD test box and an IMD test will be performed. If the vehicle does not pass the IMD test (IN.10.1) the rain test will be considered failed.
  6. At the completion of the test the team will lower the vehicle to the ground and remove it from under the rain test halo.

Common failures in the rain test include the IMD opening the shutdown circuit, the required indicator lights on the car malfunctioning during the test and the car’s electrical system shutting down during the test. Failures which result in the TSSI indicating red such as the IMD indicating an isolation failure will be subject to the Red Car procedure.

Teams should be prepared with the necessary equipment to safely keep the driven wheels off the ground as well as the necessary PPE to interact with the car’s electrical system.

Once the vehicle has passed the Rain Test, the team will receive the approved Tech Sticker from the Event Captain.
