Emergency Brake System Test Event Description – Formula SAE Driverless

5.2.2026

EVENT CAPTAINS: Nick Hills
VENUE: Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn, MI, USA
ON-SITE LOCATIONS: Past Gate 50 and to the right (near Brake Test)

Description:
No vehicle is permitted to perform the EBS test until it has passed:

  1. Tractive Battery Inspection,
  2. Mechanical Tech Inspection,
  3. EV Active Inspection,
  4. DV Active Inspection,
  5. Tilt Test, and
  6. Rain Test.

Proof of this, is the designated Tech stickers which must be applied to the car. Teams can proceed to the EBS test for the final tech sticker for Driverless cars. Once all stickers are completed then a vehicle is approved to compete in all dynamic events.

At the EBS Test Area, each team will be instructed on the proper procedure, including the Remote Stop System (RSS) race mode activation process. The vehicle will be pushed to the staging area and then the start line when called by the starter official. The official will signal the start of a Test run with the student Driverless System Officer (DSO) standing by with the team’s RSS.

The Driverless Vehicle must accelerate to 40 kph within 20 meters and perform a safe and controlled 1G stop within 8.5 meters once the EBS Test setup triggers a remote E-stop event. If the track is declared damp or wet, the stopping distance may be extended by the official. See FSAE rules for tire use at specific conditions, Rules D.5. and D.6.

If the vehicle passes, the official will sign-off the approval form and provide the team with the final Tech sticker. The vehicle is now free to proceed to the practice track or on to the dynamic events. (The approval forms shall be retained by the EBS crew and turned in at the tech garage periodically.)

If the vehicle is unable to pass the EBS test in three attempts, the car must return to the queue or out of the area for repairs and then brought back for retest. The vehicle will not be allowed to compete in Driverless events without passing the test.

Also, Operation of Brake Testing Event Area in DAMP conditions is at the discretion of the captain of the specific area.

Vehicles may be forced to return to this station for re-certification should the officials deem it necessary. Re-certification may be required if work is performed on the vehicle’s braking system, or if the vehicle is involved in an incident that results in vehicle damage.

Safety guidelines for the EBS Test:

  1. Only one car at a time in the EBS area. Do not allow a second car into the area until the last one has completed its exit.
  2. Only the vehicle push crew, ESO, DSO, and the driver are allowed to enter the EBS area. All must have dynamic passes at each visit.
  3. Do not stand directly in front or behind of a Driverless Car unless a student is sitting in the cockpit.
  4. Use water barriers/bike fencing for protection of workers and equipment.
  5. Fire extinguishers must be with the car and crew at all times.
  6. Use brooms and oil-dry as needed to keep the area clean and dry.
  7. Any vehicle damage or contact must be reported to the station manager(s).
  8. No work will be allowed on the car inside the EBS area, including plugging in a computer. Car repairs and work must be performed outside of the testing area. Specially marked areas may be set-up for this. Cars can then return to the test area at the discretion of the station manager.
