Cost Volunteer Information

Position Title: Cost Judge

Activity: Formula SAE Static Event

Position Description: For this event, each student team will submit a cost eBOM report prior to the competition detailing the manufacturing processes, materials selected and associated cost of their complete vehicle. The eBOM is pre-assessed before competition to give a comparative guide to the vehicle cost at the event; student teams present onsite to the judges their car and demonstrate that the costs report accurately represents the vehicle presented.
Cost judges are assigned to inspect the cars from a predetermined and assigned group of schools to confirm that the car and the costs assigned to the car in the cost report fairly represent the actual costs for such a prototype. Additionally, the cost judges evaluate the team’s knowledge of the manufacturing processes and associated costs of two vehicle components picked at random from a list published in the Formula SAE rules.

Judging takes place all day and each judge is assigned a cost bay in which teams are assigned 30-minute slots to be reviewed.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications/ Experience: Cost judges should be reasonably well rounded in manufacturing process and finance with some background in industrial engineering. Cost estimating experience a must – in many cases judges need to rely on their experience to determine if process used to manufacture a component is feasible and the costs are within accepted ranges.
In addition, an outgoing personality with a friendly approach to people and understanding of academic learning events is highly desirable.

Orientation and Training: All volunteers will need to read the rules and will be given onsite training at the competition.
